What Is AIRB? Your Guide to Alberta Auto Insurance Rates and Comparison Tools
The Automobile Insurance Rate Board (AIRB) is an independent agency established by Alberta’s Minister of Finance. We regulate auto insurance rates and help Albertans understand the insurance marketplace. We don’t sell insurance, but our free tools at airbfordrivers.ca let you compare current rates across Alberta insurers, check average premiums by postal code, look up approved rate changes and find insurance companies, brokers and quoting sites in one place.
Who Is AIRB?
AIRB stands for the Automobile Insurance Rate Board. We’re an independent agency established by the Minister of Finance and we work for Albertans, not for insurers. Our job has two sides: making sure auto insurance rates in Alberta are reviewed under clear rules and helping drivers understand how it all works.
What Does AIRB Do?
We review auto insurance rates. Insurers need approval before they change their rates or rating programs in Alberta. AIRB reviews these changes against five principles, including the rates must be evidence-based, fairly tied to risk (not income) and communicated clearly to consumers.
We keep Albertans informed. Insurance can feel complicated. We explain how rates work, what affects your premium and what your options are.
We oversee the marketplace. We keep an eye on how the auto insurance market is performing for Albertans.
Does AIRB Sell Insurance?
No. AIRB isn’t an insurance company, broker or agent, so we can’t quote or sell you a policy. What we can do is point you to the information and the insurers who can.
